Class today was at Cape Disappointment State Park. Cape D as we call it.

Down at the end of the Peninsula- just inside the Columbia River Bar - on the north side.

We have TWO Lighthouses. Today's lecture covered Cape Disappointment Lighthouse (1856), North Head Lighthouse (1898), the 1st order Fresnel Lens, a bit about military history, Coast Guard, and so much more that it deserves it's own blog post.

Beards Hollow Overlook

Beards Hollow was named for Captain E.N. Beard whose ship, the Vandalia, perished in the treacherous local waters in 1853.  Beard's body was found washed ashore in the little Hollow.

This new 'overlook' opened in 2010.  It is a nice place to take in the view and snap a few photos.

Looking south toward 'Fishing Rocks'. The tide is going out.

The legend of the origin of the Chinook Nation and the interdependence of the Chinook people with the Columbia River Salmon are inscribed into the basalt rock.

While it is a lovely fish cleaning table, the fishermen have been known to have the salmon slip thru the opening in the basalt rock.  Two more really functional cleaning stations have been installed.
